Ivan Barca

Founder and managing director

More than 15 years as managing director and COO in trade, consumer goods and technology. He has led branch networks with over 100 employees, brought a company from near bankruptcy back into profit and guided a management buy-out without interruption.

He came to technology through computer games, and the enjoyment has stayed with him. At fourteen he wanted to play one that required a 350 megahertz processor, 64 megabytes of memory and a dedicated 3D graphics card. A phone today has around a hundred times as much memory. So he built the computer himself from individual parts. It did not stop there, because every new game wanted more power than his computer had.

Along the way he learned something that still holds today. Anyone who wants to understand a system has to know what each part in it does, in a computer as in a business. That is why the software is made in house, built by people who understand the business behind it.

Viktum comes from Latin. The word belongs to vivere, to live, and means livelihood, what a business and the people in it live on. That is also where the old word victuals comes from. Every project is about this livelihood, about the hours and the money a business is left with in the end. That is what Viktum measures every project by, not by the number of features.

What does custom software for an SME in Switzerland cost?

The blueprint costs CHF 50 and is credited against an order. The projects themselves range from CHF 10,000 to CHF 55,000, depending on scope.

A tool that produces quotes from a note runs CHF 18,000 to 35,000. Document processing for a fiduciary office, CHF 25,000 to 50,000. Scheduling that knows travel times and qualifications, CHF 30,000 to 55,000. Price and deadline are fixed before the first line of code is written.

How long does it take until the software runs?

The first working version is in use after four weeks, even if the whole project takes longer. It is worked with from the start, instead of waiting for a finished solution. Whatever daily use reveals goes into the next round.

Does the software belong to me afterwards?

Yes, with source code. No subscription, no licence fee, no tie to Viktum. Further development can be ordered from Viktum, from someone else, or not at all. The source code is yours, and so is the decision.

What happens if the effort gets out of hand?

The price stays what it was. If the work takes more time than estimated, that is Viktum's problem and not yours. The offer also states what the first version deliberately cannot do yet, so it is clear beforehand what is coming.

Where is my data kept?

Wherever you want it, on your own server on your premises if you prefer. Anyone building software for a business sees its innermost workings: figures, customer data, contracts, correspondence. That stays confidential. What a programme does not need to record is not recorded at all.

For what size of business does this pay off?

Viktum works for SMEs with 1 to 50 employees. What matters is not size but whether a process regularly costs manual work. A task that ties up five hours every week usually pays for itself within the first year.

What is the difference from an off-the-shelf solution?

A bought solution covers eighty percent. Precisely the twenty percent that matters in your own business, it cannot do, and the business adapts to the software instead of the other way round. Custom software reflects how the work is actually done.

Does Viktum also work outside the Zurich region?

Yes, throughout Switzerland, on site or remotely. The office is in Oetwil an der Limmat in the Dietikon district, half an hour from Zurich, Baden and Aarau. We speak and write German, French, Italian and English.

Why is this so much faster than it used to be?

A large part of the craft is now done by artificial intelligence. What used to occupy a development team for half a year now takes weeks.

The hard part stays with people. A machine does not know how your business invoices, which step in the workshop is regularly forgotten, and which figure you actually need at the end of the month. That is exactly where the time gained goes.

Does Viktum also offer consulting without software?

Yes. Restructuring and earnings improvement at EBIT level, interim management with decision-making responsibility, succession planning and company sale. For situations where no tool is missing, but someone who reads the figures and shares the decision.

Nobody has a grip on our software any more, the developer is gone. What now?

This happens more often than you would think, and it is no reason to start from scratch. Viktum reads existing software, even without source code: what it does, where the data is, which interfaces it has. Every statement in the report is backed by evidence. Then we extract the data, document the program or rebuild it, as a fixed-price build. The reading itself costs CHF 3,000 to 9,000, depending on scope.
